The Prius has such crappy rear visibility looking out the back window, you can't see fuck all when backing up... So the backup camera is pretty important in the Prius. I have read that only the 'base' model did not have it, so unless you buy a used fleet vehicle, it'll have it.
Otherwise, I'd add an aftermarket one.
Much needed? For what? I've never owned a car with a backup camera, except for the newest one we have... I don't feel like I was ever missing anything not having one. There is the slight convenience of being able to park in some tighter spots because you can see exactly where the rear bumper is, but that is very compelling to make backup camera anything other than an afterthought.
