for my money (and what I did), buy some old amps, find a nice preamp, and buy modern speakers, as older speakers often needed refoaming or work beyond what they are worth.

Agreed, the Japanese companies made some great tuners (Sansui and Onkyo in particular) but their receivers, integrated amps, preamps and power amps were not so hot.
