What stands out to me in this case is that it occurred before takeoff. The mom walked with the kid before takeoff, so that means she was attentive and trying. And that's all I ask for.

The kid fell asleep on takeoff. That means the other passengers and crew were unreasonably impatient. That said, I don't fly Delta because of their bad service.
