Our Ford Expedition EL was a former rental. Same size as a Chevy Suburban. Don't know which company had it, somewhere out west. Better than a 4-door pickup, as your gear inside can be locked up, and it's out of the rain.
You might also consider a full-size (not mini) van. I don't think the big-name rental companies offer them, but there are local rental firms that do. GMC/Chevy Express/Savannahs are available with all-wheel drive; Ford Transits maybe (E-series vans no longer made). We used full-sized vans for years, including camping. Had to buy roof racks for the canoes, and carry stools to reach them.
Good idea to check with dealers.
