I believe Discovery is supposed to take place after TOS and before TNG.

I agree that the advanced tech has problems, in particular the extent to which the computer can both control portions of the ship without direction and make autonomous decisions about the life of crewmembers; transporter technology is too fast, too accurate and works at too great a distance for authenticity; force-shield tech that good wasn't even available in TNG... They're taking shortcuts to move the story rapidly forward, embracing action sequences and throwing away good opportunities for character development that come from authentic-feeling problem-solving.
The main character bugs me. The actress is good, but the character is a mess. Her every decision stems from a maelstrom of emotions, but the captain keeps saying she's cold and logical. She's got a telepathic connection to Sarek due to a (illegal) mind-meld from when she was a kid, but doesn't bear the much-ballyhooed consequences of a mind-meld (absorbing the memories and personality of the other party). They're twisting a lot of stuff to put her into a redemption-arc and at the same time they've provided her with a deus-ex-machina to absolve her of responsibility for her actions.
