My 17 and a half year old cat has been doing fine with Advantage all his life. We don't even need to do it every month, more like every other month. I'm not sure it's worth trying to concoct an alternative; although I can sympathize with not wanting to pour a chemical on one's cat, it's the only thing that's ever been so successful for us.
