Right now, Republicans are sticking close to Trump without exactly endorsing his opinions, because they think that gives them the best chance of winning in November. If Trump fired Mueller before the elections, it would be chaos for Republicans, who would almost certainly lose the house and probably the senate. If the Republicans hold on to both, Trump could safely fire Mueller right after the election.
From Mueller's perspective, the timing is related to what Trump does. Indictments in early summer of people close to Trump is throwing down the gauntlet. A report to the AG more or less indicting Trump in early fall gives Republicans a chance to recover and would look more non-partisan.
Firing Mueller now would give Trump the best chance, but it hangs the Republicans out to dry. Look for Trump to do what is best for him; the Republican Party is just a flag-of-convenience for him.
