The point with the second image is why did Reuters choose in particular to show an Ultra-Orthodox celebration of Lag B'Omer, and not a mainstream Israeli celebration? Fascination with quaint stereotype? Ethnic voyeurism? On Lag B'Omer EVERYONE in Israel is lighting bonfires.

My first Lag B'Omer in Jerusalem, I was working in the lab late one night, and the smell of smoke was so heavy that I thought maybe the building was on fire. Fortunately, I went outside before calling the police.

Imagine this phone call:

Me: I smell smoke, there's a fire!
Jerusalem Police: Nu?
