If I was to rank my best earbuds as a "10" for sound. The AirPods would be about an "8" for sound. With what little I lose in sound quality, I gain significantly in convenience and usability.
The best sounding earbuds I've used were wired ones with the squishy tips. Where you crushed the foam with your fingers and then jammed them into your ears, holding them in while the foam expanded.
I happily use my AirPods daily.
