It gets weird because different messaging protocols are in use.
Yes, it's much neater if everybody is on iOS where Messages (blue) is used instead of SMS (green).
A little bunny trail — I was watching a Brit TV show a good while back where somebody got an SMS. Their phone was set on vibrate so we here the 'silent' ring (which is why school kids prefer the 'skeeter ringtone).
With years of copying code, the ••• — — ••• was immediately understood. Made me laugh. I don't recall if I heard it on any US phones.
iOS lets one program custom vibes. I wish I could do that for all SMSs. But I get so few it doesn't matter much.
