Early, was terrific. In 1820, China was the world's largest economy. Dropped, then took over first place in 2014 again.

Exactly, it started strong, but the "Century of Humiliation" was nigh....

I remember reading somewhere that though most of human history, "China" or whoever was in charge in China, was the richest nation on earth, due in large part by geography:
1.It was mostly a flat plain in what used to be called "China Proper" and pretty fertile, supporting a very large population NOT isolated by mountains and seas, like Europe.
2.Unlike India, China was not blocked by mountains, but had a less inaccessible eastern border of desert, so trade was done via the Silk Road to Europe and via short sea trips to the Western Pacific Islands.

This is by no means complete, but a top two for China's wealth. They called themselves "the Central Kingdom" for a reason...
