Most members of the white oak family, usually with rounded lobes on the leaves, have acorns which mature in one year (or season) and are edible. Red oaks, usually with pointed lobes on the leaves, have acorns that mature every two years but are bitter. It's possible that there's an abundance because of the added red oak acorns.
Many deciduous oak's leaves turn color, then brown, but stay on the trees till spring.
