Tons of acorns? It must be a mast year

One theory holds that every year starts as a mast year potentially, but only every so many years are the conditions right to see it through to the end. But it sure seems to me that certain years the trees try harder than others. Our apple tree seems to be on a pretty consistent on-off pattern.
