For the record, having had the opportunity to demo some suppressed weapons, long and short, while not silent, some come damn close.
There are several factors to consider, but none of them add anything to this thread, same as freerad's post.
I think it obvious the mention of the firearm using the silencer goes to underscore the intent of the killer. Reading into the limited information as little as possible, it would appear the killer wanted to do as much damage as possible while doing as little as possible to alert as few as possible to the threat.
To that end, the news outlets report a story. Whether or not it furthers an agenda, the mention of 'silent' paints a clearer picture.
It's no different than other stories including a mention of several firearms, and/or large quantities of ammo, also found on the shooter's person.
Regardless of any of the above, it's a tragedy.
