I posted about this earlier and got my answer by reading my own post.
Yesterday, I told the gift-giver that my s/o and I just wouldn't use them and that I wanted to use the dough to upgrade my s/o's Mac Mini.
He said, "no problem."
I'm really relieved, although we may never get another "big" gift again.
It would be great if we could submit a wish list without being crass.
In case anyone is interested, mine includes a Gitzo CF tripod for my 20D/100-400L lens. I always put this purchase off in order to spend the bucks on others. Sometimes it sucks to be self-sacrificing
