Knowing a number of news anchors, I'm surprised it doesn't occur more often. Most could make a sailor blush. It was amazing how different they were from their on-air persona. We had a longtime anchor in Tampa who came across as straight laced as white bread, a favorite of the old-time conservatives. What none knew was that he was tattooed from the neck down, drank like a fish and couldn't string a sentence together unless f*ck was in it at least twice.
What happened in this case is that the weekend anchor -- who I don't remember seeing before as a weekend anchor, he looked like a very young kid, maybe in his mid-20's -- thought that he was off the air and was talking about how badly he'd screwed up giving the news. The background folks were chatting with him so it was obvious they were unaware too that they were still on air -- and some of what they were saying sounded very unprofessional though not profane. It went on for maybe 2-3 minutes and then faded out without explanation or anything. It was painful to watch.
