I spoke with an old, dear friend of mine (32 years of friendship, including working together at first jobs, and being roommates) earlier this evening about this. He used to be fairly moderate R but is now pretty much regular Republican. I asked what he thought about the insurrection. He said that he did not approve of it, but that the media was making way too much of it and that he had to quit reading the news.
He kept comparing the insurrection to “six months of violence, burning cities, etc.” He kept equating it with “BLM violence.” I mentioned to him that while some of that was not BLM, but it was antifa, a lot of it was false flag right wing groups like proud boys etc. He said antifa was in on the capital violence and I said no way, the FBI declared today there was zero evidence of antifa involvement. He said he does not believe anything the FBI says.
He was having none of my side. He said he did not vote for Trump in ‘16 but he did vote for him in ‘20. I asked why ‘20, and he said “Are you kidding, look at the alternative, things are already going to hell right now.”
And we had to quit talking about it and move on to something else. I decided I would have to talk to him about it the next time we see each other, which won’t be anytime soon since he lives 10 hours away. He’s a good person. So many good people have been brainwashed. One thing we did agree on was we both said we did not know if things will ever be normal between people in our country again.
It is all so very sad and tragic.
