Even the nicer ones employ teens and young adults. It’s not a business model that rewards adult earners unless you’re a manager or exec. So when change needs to happen fast, they can’t/won’t.

I keep thinking that the self checkouts grocers pioneered would take off even more by now. The large hardware store chains obviously got the hint. But instead it’s mostly empty checkout lanes unless it’s Thanksgiving. Why any shareholder allows stores to be built that way, with $0 sales/ per sq ft in those areas, is a mystery.
