I have renewed for a year-long $5/month deal twice without much pain. The first renewal was by phone, the second was online. The online renewal was a little confusing; it initially looked like I could do it without having to deal with chat. It might have worked, but it was showing me two different amounts and I didn't want to have to fight for a refund so I started a chat and had the online rep do it.
The trick is to act before your current deal expires. Even if they don't want to give another $5 deal to a current customer, the worst that can happen is you cancel and go without for a week or a month.
