Amazon Echo - 3rd Generation just as good as 4th generation? Only for AUX output.

I have 3rd and 4th generation dots and use the newer one for listening to streaming radio.
But if I'm not using the speaker the 3rd will work the same?
I have a Flex also and they all seem to take instructions well.
