Got my first booster on Saturday. I had already gotten four full doses of Moderna. I’m down to three open lines on my two CDC cards. My next booster, according to the pharmacist, is due in four months. The CVS pharmacist told me I was the only recipient of a COVID45 vaccine that day and they were about to close.
My daughter, age 32, kidney transplant, got a dose of Evusheld on Friday. It is supposed to protect her for four months. It was two separate injections (from rather large syringes) in her buttocks. One was ticagevimab and the other cilgavimab; each is a monoclonal antibody (monoclonal antibodies are laboratory- produced molecules engineered to serve as substitute antibodies that can restore, enhance or mimic the immune system's attack on pathogens. Evusheld is designed to block viral attachment and entry into human cells, thus neutralizing the virus.) She has had five full doses of Moderna. We had to drive 55 miles one way to find a clinic that had stock of the Evusheld. Here are the folks eligible for the combo drug:
Any solid organ transplant recipient.
• Any solid tumor, on active myelosuppressive chemotherapy.
• Allogeneic stem cell transplant not more than two years from transplant UNLESS still on
immunosuppressive therapy.
• Autologous stem cell transplant not more than two years from transplant UNLESS still on
immunosuppressive therapy.
• B-cell malignancies, on active treatment (e.g., B-cell lymphomas, chronic lymphocytic leukemia,
acute B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia, etc.).
• Acute myeloid leukemia under active treatment.
• Multiple myeloma, on active treatment or maintenance therapy.
• Primary or secondary T-cell immunodeficiency, including severe combined immunodeficiency.
• Receipt of the following immunosuppressive medication within the past 12 months (including
for solid organ transplant).
o Anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG)
o Alemtuzumab
o Anti-B-cell therapy (e.g., rituximab)
• Receipt of anti-CD19 or anti-BCMA (CAR)-T-cell immunotherapy, within six months of treatment.
• Additional pediatric conditions to be considered as Category 1 (age 12-17):Combined immune
deficiencies with or without immune dysregulation (e.g., APDS, STAT3 GOF, ALPS).
o Primary immune regulatory disorders with or without immune deficiency (e.g.,
APECED, XIAP).
o High-risk or relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoblastic lymphoma on
intensive therapy (not maintenance therapy).
Also, if you can answer YES to all of the questions below, you may qualify to receive Evusheld:
o I have NOT received a COVID vaccine in the last 14 days.
o I have NOT tested positive for COVID in the last 20 days.
o I have NOT received COVID antibody treatment in the last 90 days.
o I have NOT been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID in the
past 10 days. Close contact means being within 6 feet of someone for 15 minutes or
more during a 24-hour period.
o I have NOT had a heart attack, stroke or other heart problems, AND I am NOT at high risk for cardiac (heart) events (NOTE: If you have discussed this with your provider and they agree you should proceed with Evusheld you can do so).
