I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: This nation was DAMNED LUCKY Pence said the things he said and did the things he did that day. I detest the guy and what he stands for, but goddamn if he isn’t an American patriot and a hero.
Pence just did his job. He gets no thanks from me for that. My employer never thanked me for just doing my job.

Pence declined joining a criminal conspiracy. I think there are higher standards for hero-dom.
I see both sides of this. While it's true he was "just doing his job" and "declined joining a criminal conspiracy", you also have to realize that he was probably under tremendous pressure at the time to go along with Dump's directives. No, for sure the guy isn't a saint, but ... had he caved into the pressure from his then-boss and associated cronies, aka the co-co's, we might be in a very different place right now.
Also, one can imagine that this is a big part of why his standing is around 1% of the current GOP candidates. So he's definitely paid a price for going against "the boss"... he'd been trying to toe the line, but with Dump (as for most extreme narcissists), you're either with him or against him; there's no in-between.
