No offense to all those convinced that battery powered crap is the wave of the future, but ...
I have 1/2 acre and bought a battery powered mowed advertised to cut up to 1/2 acre on one charge. It did once or twice, but as the battery aged it cut less and less on a charge, and in really hot weather it cut even far less! Within two years I had to replace the battery which costs as much as the mower and battery did when I first bought it. Now days most of the battery mowers I've looked at no longer come with batteries or chargers - that's an extra cost item.
The old gas mower I had replaced ran for almost 20 years only requiring an occasional tune up. new blade and new wheels. Based on this I'm inclined to say that the cost of going electric is about 10 times that of a good old gas powered unit.
And the "save the planet from global climate change" is an extremely weak argument when full life cycle costs are factored in or when you consider that shifting production of "environmentally insensitive" items from on-shore to off-shore can't save the planet unless off-shore is on Mars.
