Assuming the Thunderbolt 4 enclosure is compatible with Thunderbolt 3, when connected to a Thunderbolt 3 port, shouldn't it run at the max speed of Thunderbolt 3, which is significantly faster than 10 GB/sec (aka USB 3.1 Gen 2)?
I guess if it was actually TB4. But, what I'm now realizing, is that there aren't really many true TB4 enclosures out there. Most of them are actually USB4, which probably explains the "slow down" on TB3, although I don't know the details behind that.
If you select TB4/USB4 enclosures on OWC's site, you only get two options, the Ministack STX and the new OWC Express 1M2 (which is actually USB4 and the only option when you select USB4).
But, the Ministack STX (as the only true TB4 enclosure listed) doesn't list speed specs for different connection types.
I actually have a Ministack STX. Maybe if I ever get bored, I'll try some speed tests, but don't hold your breath for that!
