This was my association with the term as well, and given that we're applying it to someone who appears to wish to return to those days, I worry it might be misconstrued as more dog-whistling to the alt-white base. It's very common and long-established usage in any setting that deals with geriatrics, mental health issues, brain injury, etc.
Anyone who has had concern with the care of their aging parents will be familiar with the term.
