Never having been to the UK, H. Salt Esq. Fish & Chips was my goto decades ago.

There were two places not too far from me, a nice ride on a pleasant day.

More recently, pre-COVID there was a place in San Leandro, but it wasn't very good.

I don't know how H. Salt compares to a typical UK chip shop, but I really like their fare.

Rolling my own ersatz was ok, Trident cod with someone's steak cut fries.

Enjoyable enough, but I never found a malt vinegar that came close to satisfying.

It's very difficult to find decent fish and chips in the US. Best fish and chips I've found in the SF bay area is Hook Fish near Golden Gate Park. Mersea on Treasure Island isn't bad either (though not great).
very easy on the east coast. it does depend if you like "batter" or crumb and mix crust. the former in about a thousand Irish pubs, the latter in more traditional NE places.
