Since it's exhaled air, hasn't the oxygen been used already and it's higher in CO2.


The fact that it obviously works means the all oxygen hasn't been used.

The efficiency of lungs would determine how much oxygen is used from a given 'breath' of air.

Since nature has provided this method of 'buddy breathing' it stands to reason there is a reason why it works.

We certainly exhale O2 as well as CO2.

An athlete's lungs are more efficient than those of someone who's sedentary.

A baby seal would seemingly need less than a larger seal.

The fact that an adult seal can stay submerged for half an hour is probably a clue.
