i have not rolled my own in a while-putting together external hard drive

AFAIK, the Mac does not support the 20 Gbps flavor of USB, so you shouldn't pay more just to get that capability.

I have a 4 TB Samsung T7, and a 4 TB Samsung 990 Pro in an OWC 1M2 chassis.

The 990 definitely radiates heat, which is why the 1M2 looks like a big old heat sink.

I would say that for portability go for something like the T7, although the 990 Pro in the 1M2 box is just as fast as the internal SSD on my M1 Mini...
