It's a more recent innovation. This is the newest version of the one in Little M's bedroom:

Companies are now producing ACs that are "n" shaped instead of "u" shaped, too.

A mini split has an AC condenser unit outside of the house and a vent that goes to one or more components inside the house. It avoids the heavy amount of ductwork required for a full-scale central AC system.

The people I know who have mini split systems adore them. Wish I could have one for my apartment but I know it isn't doable. I bet the Board of Directors wouldn't allow me to have one even if my unit was on the first floor! Window ACs (with a safety bracket) or portable ACs only.
