Well, I got my dead 8,000 BTU down the stairs and ready for the alley without dying.

Ours is covered under the recall. Midea will give us just over $300 for it (though we paid near $400) or send a tech to repair it. I inspected ours and it doesn't display any issues at all. I chose the service option. Rather have the existing AC "serviced" than buy another AC unit, pay someone to to remove the old unit, install the new unit and then have to figure out how to dispose of the old one. Servicing the existing works out better for us.
