I've never noticed a tendency towards more or less affection based on gender.
It's my opinion cats do pick their 'best buddies' though, not unlike people do.
It's been my experience that female cats, and much more so, dogs can be very protective and even more protective of female humans home alone in the house.
We had a milkman that used to come in and put the milk in the fridge and look around for empties. As long as any of the boys were home, he'd only have to watch that the dog (black Lab) didn't lick him to death. If any of the girls were home alone he couldn't come in the house.
