As always, anything can go wrong anytime, anywhere, so backing up of files is always recommended.
But she can "add" X to her boot drive. She should make sure she has plenty of room. Select Install OS X and don't check Erase, etc.
If she doesn't add the printer drivers and extra languages, she can keep the Install down to 2G or less. X likes a lot of free space, so the total freespace should be 15-20% after installation.
