Spydercos have been made by several different manufactures over the years and have varied greatly in quality. I don't think much of most Benchmades, either.
Gerber used to make some nice knives, I have my doubts about them, too. I've got an old 3" Gerber single blade lock back. I added a little screw-clamp to make it one-handed. It's worked well for years.
I've got a bone/brass folding Boker that's very nice, almost too nice to carry, but raises fewer eyebrows than the Gerber.
I has a Cold Steel Tanto I bought because I'm always looking for a good knife with a Tanto blade. Cold Steel is not it. Really, bad, cheap knives.
A G Russell is a famous knife maker, but I've never liked any of his creations.
