There are many 1GB SD cards listing for less than $40. You can search over at the "other place" to find a lot of excellent deals. For a digital camera you need to have an SD card that writes and reads fast. Depending on how you use your camera, you probably shouldn't buy one with less than 60X rating, preferably higher.
With the cost of SD media coming down, it makes sense to look at 2GB cards. I found a high-speed 2GB 133X SD card for $60, with a $15 rebate:

There's a lot of deals out there, but this one stands out because it's the lowest priced 2GB high-speed SD card available right now at $45 AR. Even at $60 it's an excellent deal. If you need to stick with 1GB for compatibility reasons, or other considerations, you should be able to find a high-speed SD card for less than $40 with a little searching.
