It's my backbone machine. A Smurf with a G4/450 in it (actually a G4/400 upclocked) that I've used since 2002, and am using now to dupe data DVDs while I'm on the Mini (which only has a combo drive).
There will likely even be some serious power coming around with upgrades for the ZIFs
any day/week/month now, because the Moto 7448 is in production.
These are 1MB cache G4s (on chip at full clock) that suck a mere 10 watts at 2GHz.
These are the G4s everyone waited so long for, and Moto couldn't get out the door.
They will take on a G5 at about 90% performance, at equal clock speeds, underl OS X.
Although I'd much rather have a Sawtooth or above - for other reasons (video, dual capable, more RAM), 1GB of RAM and a 2GHz G4 in a machine that is already improved with the PCI card for the HDs, a DVD-r (and the above RAM), makes buying a Mini a tough choice because of the $$ you'll need to get it to the same level. Where else can you stuff 4 HDs and an optical, that RAM and get dependable ops for $500?
My only issue is that there is, indeed, something screwy with my machine and data to the HDs, and I don't know where it is, so I'm slowly moving toward FW and keeping my eyes open for a new box. It doesn't seem to matter whether the data is via PCI or motherboard bus. Disappointing because of the vast amounts of data/music I move back and forth, but probably not even noticable by someone using it for Word, surfing and email.
Plus, the box itself is absolute cherry. Then again, so is audio equipment I bought back in 1978.
