I second Paul's warning on use of online map routes. Hwy 36 is a lovely scenic drive....and suggested frequently by MapQuest etal. Definitely continue past 299 and keep going up the coast.

My vote to add as a Humboldt State grad...Prairie Creeks Redwoods - Fern Canyon.
