OT: Self installed Home Burglar Alarms?

Some insurance companies will give you a discount if the alarm was installed/approved by a certified electrical engineer. My dad was one, so he got a discount on the cheapo model he personally installed. He eventually had one professionally installed with an alarm pad and a small sign out front and a monthly fee for remote monitoring.
