Never had a problem mixing repeater chipsets, nor brands.
Try a repeater, many of them have an external antenna, that alone makes it more sensitive to picking up weak signals.
I have picked up several for friends, and clients. None over $18, all of them with external antennae. The nice thing about a repeater is that you can put it wherever the strongest signal is, so you don't have to jam yourself on top of the file cabinet just to check your email.
