New Restrictions for Checked Baggage

New Restrictions for Checked Baggage

As of January 1, 2008, airline passengers are no longer be able to pack loose lithium batteries in checked luggage. Why? Because lithium batteries have the potential to overheat and ignite and are therefore considered hazardous materials. The new rule is designed to reduce the risk of fire. Only those lithium batteries already installed in electronic devices will be allowed in checked baggage. Passengers can bring lithium batteries on board in carry-on baggage only if they are stored in the original container or in a plastic bag.
