The "best" quality can't be gotten without investing heavily, but here's a good way to do this on the cheap that yields very good results:
1. Buy an iMic ($40). It converts the record to digital without an amp, reducing inaccuracy (RIAA curve intact).
2. Invest in Soundsoap2 ($100) to clean up the resulting recordings. Amazing.
Alternatively:
3. Find and buy as many of the beloved songs as are available on the iTunes Music Store. At 99ยข a pop, you'd need to convert at least 12 albums to make vinyl-to-digital conversion more cost-effective (assuming the songs are available on iTunes, and that your time is worth nothing).
