Turntables need to be "bumped up" through the means of some sort of pre-amp. This pre-amp brings the audio signal from the turntable to "line level" which you can then feed into the audio in jack of your G5 or to a powered amplifier and your speakers.
For my analog-digital setup, I use Technics SL-1200MK2s connected to a Numark PPD mixer (which "pre-amps" the signal). From the mixer, I run two separate lines - one to my old PTP225 (OS9 running the freeware Coaster) and the other to a powered amp and speakers.
I'm using Coaster for OS9 - it's old, it's controls are limited and I wouldn't recommend it anymore since others have mentioned better and modern applications. But it's a decent setup that converts clean audio and since I'm not listening to my iPod in critical situations, I'm not overtly concerned.
Good luck!
