Maybe it's because I grew up in England, but I've never understood the whole "TV in the background" thing.
You either watch TV -- which holds your attention so you focus on it and enjoy it -- or you don't. Letting crap run in the background just encourages the production of more crap, surely?
Silence won't hurt you. Neither will soft ambient/holiday/jazz/classical music, which actually ADDS something to your environment. All TV adds is noise.
I'm not a doctor, but I'd be happy to wager that if you drop the habit of NEEDING other things/noises/distractions going on around you all the time, you'll find yourself better able to focus on the things that DO matter. Just a theory.
