Silence won't hurt you. Neither will soft ambient/holiday/jazz/classical music, which actually ADDS something to your environment. All TV adds is noise.
I'm not a doctor, but I'd be happy to wager that if you drop the habit of NEEDING other things/noises/distractions going on around you all the time, you'll find yourself better able to focus on the things that DO matter. Just a theory.
I don't usually have any beef with you, but that is really condescending. Did you get up on the preachy side of the bed today? You are assuming an awful lot, considering that you know virtually nothing about me.
Not that it's any of your business, but:
I like peace and quiet. I like silence. But it's just about impossible to find where I live. In a poll a few years ago, noise was the #1 reason given for moving away from the city in which I live.
I am not "in the habit of NEEDING distractions".
Like RAMd®d, I don't like music as a background noise. I am not a fan of soft, ambient music. I loathe ambient holiday music. I hate going into stores this time of year because of it. And I certainly don't consider classical music or jazz to be suitable for use as background treacle.
However, I find some TV programming rather restful, far more so than the frequent intrusive noise I encounter when working at the office or at home. Having the TV or radio on actually helps me block some of that stuff out. I am also, believe it or not, capable of following something like a football game while working at the computer.
