ok, here's what i have done.

1. i started in safe boot and repaired disk utilities in safe mode.

2. because i don't have the intaller disk with disk utility, i went ahead and started in single user mode and ran fsck. at the end it said it had repired the disk successfully.

3. meanwhile, i still can't open iphoto with success. i can open addressbook, but it is empty, and i'm looking for help on how to reload my addressbook.

4. finally, i have had an intermittent incident which is that multiple lines, horizontal and vertical, sometimes crowd the screen increasingly. usually i can shut down the powerbook, give a couple minutes and restart and all is back to "normal." i've been told by a local mac repair shop that it is mostt likely the motherboard. any input on this?
