My experience with cheap cables is that you get what you pay for. I've had three failures with no-name firewire cables that weren't doing anything but connecting drives to my Mac. One actually failed inside my G3 Macenstein, when I decided to use the internal plug on my FW USB PCI card to connect to a FW bridgeboard on a drive inside the G3 case.
OTOH, I have a pair of Granite Digital cables that have seen 6+ years of hard service -- getting around, coiled and uncoiled, plugged and unplugged, with barely a dropped frame.
IMHO, YMMV, and all that.
