My wife did one of these to get a TREK road bike about 2 years ago. She completed everything, and faxed everything in, and called to confirm, and kept track.....and they said the bike wasn't available, so they sent her a VISA gift card for the street price of the bike (as opposed to MSRP). They can work.
She found a number of things that were of little real cost, and she found enough offers that she didn't need to give anyone info for a CC application, or anything like that. Magazine subscription to TV Guide, inkjet carts, an on-line pet supply store and Columbia House DVD. After what she spent, she still cleared over $500, and we ended up with some ink carts, DVDs and some pet supplies we would have purchased at some point anyway.
