Firing a gun isn't an appropriate reaction to misdemeanor trespassing.
No, it's not.
But at the time she fired at the tires, she apparently believed they were possibly burglars, not mere trespassers. As he/they were not caught with any property, "simple trespass" or misdemeanor trespassing was the crime charged.
She shot out the tires, he/they couldn't escape, and were captured and charged.
I really like this part:
She had to balance on her walker as she pulled out a snub-nosed .38-caliber handgun.

An 82 year old woman, alone in rural Kentucky, shoots tires so possible thieves, definite trespassers are arrested (three were released)... I have *no* problem with that.
