The "product transition" is being described in the context being a hit to earnings. My guess is that this mystery transition isn't such a mystery...it's Leopard.
If history is any guide Apple will be packing in copies of Leopard and Tiger in units that ship right after the release. Apple will also be including retail copies to people who buy Macs at their BM stores for a few days plus the the Up-To-Date program. All of this product trasitioning from 10.4 to .5 has to be accounted for and is part of why Apple is now lowering earnings guidance from WS estimates.
