I thought about that possibility, because I know that sometimes happens around here. When I re-read the story, I did notice a police helicopter was also in the air and near the scene, so, unfortunately I don't think aiding the police entered into this particular incident. Like you, I'd be cheering for the enterprising DA who could pull off charging for the deaths. The entire episode could have even more easily wound up killing four innocent people on the ground.
