That's what I was thinking when I looked at the pictures. That shelf will just collect dust anyway.
The biggest concern I would have is the fact you use a gas stove. Unless I missed something, the people who have been posting about theirs have all stated they have electric. Of course, I'm not too tall, so I think about how easy it would be for me to catch a loose shirt tail in the flame as I reached up to the mw.
